A diet that offers protein and carbs is better than one that only offers protein, says a study.

The results of the study, which involved nearly 7,000 adults aged 50 to 74, have been published in the British Journal of Nutrition.

Researchers asked participants to choose between a diet with the option of eating only protein, and one that included all the other ingredients in the diet, such as vegetables, fruits and fats.

The participants in the protein group were told they could only eat protein in the form of beans, legumes and nuts, and the ones in the fat group were given the option to eat either protein in whole foods or a mixture of proteins, fats and other foods.

Participants who ate the protein diet also had a higher risk of dying from cardiovascular disease, diabetes, obesity and other chronic diseases.

“The protein diet was better for the heart and blood pressure, but it was also associated with a higher rate of death and death from other causes,” said lead researcher Dr Jochen Rietveld, of the University of Würzburg in Germany.

The findings were based on information from the German National Diabetes Control Registry, which includes more than 17 million people aged 20 to 79, and are similar to previous studies.

The study did not include a specific calorie count, which could have led to bias, but researchers did not expect to find any differences.

Dr Riettveld said the findings could be interpreted in a number of ways.

“It might be that if the protein is a lot less protein, it’s probably not as good for you.

It might be it’s because the proteins are less dense and that the body doesn’t absorb them as well,” he said.”

That might be the case, but I don’t know how much that’s the case.”

Researchers say the findings should not be taken to mean the protein-only diet is necessarily healthier than a carbohydrate-based diet.

“We’re talking about the nutritional quality of the diet here,” Dr Rietteld said.

“It doesn’t mean that it’s necessarily healthier.”
